Updated over 3 weeks ago

Having a goal recorded and shared with a mentor helps with personal accountability, and you will be more likely to see it through. This article breaks down a SMART goal and the necessary steps to create one.

Steps to create a goal

From the Home page, select ‘Create Goal’.

Users will then be encouraged to create a SMART goal with examples and tips to guide them. Select next after you have written some text for each prompt.

SMART goals are important because they provide a structured and clear framework for setting and achieving objectives. The acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Together, these elements ensure that goals are clear, focused, and achievable within a specific timeframe, which increases the likelihood of success! Here’s why each component contributes to the overall importance of SMART goals:

  • Specific: A specific goal clearly defines what is to be accomplished. It addresses the questions of who, what, where, when, and why. This precision helps avoid ambiguity and ensures that everyone involved understands the goal.

  • Measurable: Measurable goals include criteria for tracking progress and determining when the goal has been achieved. This provides a clear way to assess progress, stay motivated, and adjust efforts as needed.

  • Achievable: Goals should be realistic and attainable given the available resources and constraints. Setting achievable goals ensures that they are within reach and avoids the frustration and demotivation that can come from pursuing impossible objectives.

  • Relevant: Relevant goals align with broader business or personal objectives. This ensures that the goal is worthwhile and directly contributes to the overall mission or purpose, maintaining focus and ensuring that efforts are not wasted on unimportant tasks.

  • Time-bound: Time-bound goals have a clear deadline. This creates a sense of urgency and helps prioritise tasks, ensuring that efforts are concentrated within a specific time frame and reducing the tendency to procrastinate.

Review the goal and select a card

Once all the questions are answered, you must review your goal and choose a background style card to make it stand out! It is worth noting that at any future point you can come back and edit your goal, or even create multiple goals to aim for!

Assign a goal to a mentor

If you have a confirmed mentor relationship, you can assign your goal to a specific mentor for tracking. Look for ‘Advanced Options’ and select your chosen Mentor from the dropdown.

When finished, select ‘Create goal’.
